Adventure in Africa: A Photography Expedition and Yoga Safari to benefit Big Life Foundation & The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, October 28-November 3rd, 2016 Kenya, Africa
Mahatma Ghandi said, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” It is in this spirit that OmLuxe, a yoga and personal growth-based travel collective has chosen two African charity organization’s The Big Life Foundation and The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to raise money and awareness so these foundations can continue their work in East Africa. This is a once -in-a-lifetime opportunity for those who wish to learn about efforts to protect and rescue these highly sensitive and caring animals.
The Big Life Foundation was co-founded by photographer Nick Brandt and award-winning conservationist Richard Bonham in September 2010. Since its inception, Big Life has expanded to employ hundreds of local Maasai rangers- with more than 40 permanent outposts and tent-based field units, 13 vehicles, tracker dogs, and aerial surveillance-protecting 2 million acres of wilderness in the Amboseli-Tsavo-Kilimanjaro ecosystem of East Africa. Big Life was the first organization in East Africa to establish coordinated cross-border anti-poaching operations. To date, Big Life’s rangers have made over 2,000 arrests and confiscated over 3,000 weapons and poaching tools. www.biglife.org
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) is a pioneering conservation charity that has worked to protect all wildlife and habitats in Kenya for nearly 40 years. sheldrickwildlifetrust.org
On call every day of the year travelling throughout Kenya to rescue orphaned elephants and rhinos left alone with no hope of survival, to date, the DSWT has successfully hand-raised over 200 infant elephants and reintegrated more than 90 back to a life in the wild.
Why Save the Elephant?”
Elephants have roamed the wild for 15 million years and today this iconic species faces their biggest threat to survival due to continued ivory poaching. As long as there is a demand for ivory, elephants will be continued to be killed for their tusks. Today it is estimated up to 36,000 elephants are killed annually, that’s one life lost every 15 minutes.
We will work to bring about social awareness and raise funds via Crowdrise leading up to the trip through our diverse social media contacts and networks as well as friends and family to do our part in helping to save the elephant and to protect & rescue this magnificent animal.
An African safari is one of the ultimate experiences every traveler should have and this beautifully curated 7-day adventure in Kenya is the ideal introduction to this amazing country.
Private Visit to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Orphan’s Project
When a tiny new-born elephant is orphaned, it is often because its mother and family have been killed to serve the brutal ivory trade. For an elephant, family is all important; a calf’s very existence depends upon its mother’s milk for the first two years of life.
In Kenya an Elephant Nursery exists nestled within Nairobi National Park under the auspices of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which is overseen by Dr Dame Daphne Sheldrick, whose elephant experience spans a lifetime. This pioneering organization, which works in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service offers hope for any orphaned elephant fortunate enough to be found alive.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is proud to have saved over 150 orphaned infant calves, which would otherwise have perished. More importantly, every one of these orphans can look forward to a quality of life in wild terms, living free in Tsavo East National Park protected by their new extended orphaned family and friends amongst the wild herds.

This is true wilderness, and home to varieties of animals and birds rarely seen in other parts of the country. Here are to be found the Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, the Reticulated giraffe and Blue Shanked Somali ostrich. The sun baked landscape is breathtaking with surrounding mountains shimmering on the horizon as temperatures rise. To the west, the sheer sided slopes of majestic Ol Olokwe Mountain form a perfect back drop to any photograph.
Cleaving the two reserves, the Uaso Nyiro River (Brown river in the local language) winds through a mature stands of Newtonia and Sycamore Fig trees, Acacia and Doum Palms, one of the few branching palms to be found anywhere in the world.
Large herds of elephant are seen along the river’s banks which are much favoured by crocodiles and there are sightings of lion, cheetah, leopard and much else. Bird life abounds, a seeming anomaly given the harsh climate, but then nature in the wild is always full of delightful surprises.
